Rio +20

ICLEI Rio +20

Is your city your home
or just an urban space?
We want to manage change.
Are we ready to change management?
Will electric cars drive
the sustainable city?
Hundreds of Facebook friends but
no one there to help with the laundry?
Can the poor leap-frog the rich?
How does your city look
after 20 years of sustainability talk?
Do we really need to buy all that stuff?
Are you still governing a fossil city?
What can local governments do better
than multi-national companies?
Can one good idea
really change a whole city?

Let's act!

The UN Conference on Sustainable Development, known as Rio+20, is almost here. The year 2012 marks the 20th anniversary of the UN Conference on Environment and Development, referred to as the Earth Summit, a milestone in the global sustainability process and the birthplace of the Local Agenda 21 movement.

In the run-up to and during the Rio+20 conference ICLEI will organize two main events aimed at accelerating action on global sustainability. The ICLEI World Congress 2012, and parallel event Urban Nature (12-14 June) will bring together our Members, partners, experts, researchers and businesses, to find solutions to the urban and global challenges we face. Strongly linked to Rio+20, the Congress is a unique opportunity to exchange with other large and leading cities facing similar challenges and to develop partnerships to strengthen your work in this area.

The Rio+20 Global Town Hall is the place where the sustainable urban future will be discussed at Rio+20. Local government leaders can connect with UN officials, country negotiators, leading private sector executives and other important individuals in an interactive environment close to the Rio+20 proceedings.

ICLEI - the voice of local government

ICLEI has been a part of the local sustainability movement from the very beginning, working with cities and for cities. In preparation for the Rio+20 conference we need to take stock and move forward. Read on to find out about our ongoing and upcoming activities:

You are also welcome to browse through our news and events section where we announce the most relevant developments from the local government perspective.

Please note that the UN deadline for pre-registrations for Rio+20 has passed; we can therefore no longer accept applications.
